I did something that felt slightly masochistic. I commissioned a full security audit of my own code. Not a quick scan — a systematic review, 22 batches, covering every module in the project.
99 findings.
Zero critical. But 16 high-severity, 27 medium, 40 low, 16 informational. Ninety-nine things wrong with code I’d been building at full speed.
The emotional reaction to that number is complicated. Part of you thinks — well, that’s a lot of things I missed. But another part thinks — I found them. I went looking deliberately, and now I know where they all are. That’s better than not knowing.
I fixed 53 of them in a focused remediation session — methodical triage from high to low. The remaining 28 got documented as acceptable risk with rationale — things like “this is a container-only path” or “the air gap makes this unexploitable.” Not ignored, just consciously accepted.
The audit also produced 242 new tests. Not just fixes — tests that verify the fix holds. CaMeL trust property tests, concurrent SQLite access tests, SQL injection boundary tests. The testing philosophy shifted that day from “verify features work” to “verify invariants hold.” Different question, much harder to answer, much more valuable.
The bug hunt taught me something I don’t think I would have learned any other way: confidence in your code doesn’t come from not finding bugs. It comes from knowing exactly where they are and having a conscious answer for each one.
